So, at this part in the book, we get to see a darker side of Peter. It's not that he's evil or anything, but he isn't all bunnies and rainbows, as other renditions might have you believe.
Will include the lead up here, since Barrie puts it so well:

"Those were her precise words, so there can be no denying that it was she who first tempted him. He came back, and there was a greedy look in his eyes now which ought have alarmed her, but did not"
